When
it came to picking out rings, we wanted something unique and meaningful
to both of us. And after doing some research, we found we really liked
the symbolism behind Celtic knotwork motifs.
Ancient Celts believed that life was a riddle or "eternal journey," and their knot patterns symbolized the path that lead through the Labyrinth of life to its sacred center - the point at which heaven touches earth. Every curve and bend in the knot signifies yet another level of spiritual discovery that faces us before we can find the center.
Cool, huh? But there were still a lot of knot patterns out there, and we wanted to pick one that meant something to us. After doing some more searching (isn't the Internet great?), we found a neat design called the Tibetan Dancing Knot, which symbolizes "commitment in balance with individuality." And even though every married couple laughs when we tell them that, we like it!
Next step was finding
a designer who could incorporate our knot into a Celtic band, and here's
where we really lucked out. We found a gentleman by the name of Bob Knopf,
who owns a custom jewelry business called deSignet. Bob took on the task and, after sending a few designs back and forth on
the web, created a set of spectacular looking rings in 14 karat white
gold.
In fact, Bob liked the end product so much, he used our design for a ring he was working on for his wife's anniversary present. Since he was going to post the ring design on his website, Bob was kind enough to let us name the knot pattern. So, as a surprise for Ron, I asked if he would name it the Mohan Knot, after a character in Ron's novel. Since it's debut on the website, we've been told that the ring is selling very well! There are even several variations: Check them out.
So then one of these little rings traveled all the way to Paris with us, where Ron pulled it out in the shadow of the Porte de Mars (which is probably as old or older that Celtic knotwork itself) and asked me to marry him. Say what you will about diamond rings, but ours have a meaning and history to them that we'll always remember!
